Inspiration & Invigoration in Plovdiv,
the 2019 European Capital of Culture

The Write Away Europe Plovdiv Writing Retreat is a small and immersive retreat set in the 2019 European Capital of Culture: Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Writers will find loads of creative inspiration in this charming city, one of Europe's hidden gems despite being the oldest continually inhabited city in Europe. Plovdiv is a place where the past and the present mingle together, making it a unique haven for introspection, inspiration, and reflection. Nestled between two vast mountain ranges, Plovdiv has always been a cultural crossroads with a rich historical heritage influenced by Thracians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. This melange makes this vibrant city the place to enrich and inspire your own writing and get your creative juices flowing.

The daily inspiring Round Table Writing Discussions will explore the craft of writing, your ideas and works in progress, and how to best tell your story and bring it to fruition, with feedback and support from fellow writers and facilitators. The evening Lit-up Round Table Writing Workshops are a time for reflecting and reviewing, sharing and workshopping writing over drinks and snacks. Dinners will be at delightful restaurants, sampling the best of local cuisine, and we will enjoy a walking tour of Plovdiv's historical sights, which are numerous and include Old Town, the Roman Amphitheater, and the Roman Stadium.

After the daily Round Table Writing Discussions, there will be time for wandering down lovely winding cobbled streets and viewing and visiting the famed 2,000-year old Roman amphitheater still in use for performances today. In short, Plovdiv is a place where the past and the present mingle together, making it a unique haven for introspection, inspiration, and reflection.

Writers will stay in beautiful accommodation in the charming city center, nearby the sights and Europe’s longest pedestrian zone, and vibrant Kapana, a Bohemian area popular with artists and creatives with numerous small shops and cafes ideal for whiling away the free afternoons walking, exploring or sitting al fresco and digging deeper into your words and ideas in this captivating, cultural city.

In addition to the region’s fine foods and wines, Plovdiv is famous for its aylyak—a feeling of being open and receptive to living in the moment, savoring the pleasure of existence and being unfazed by external pressures–an ideal attitude for looking deep within yourself and your writing.
